Find out why getting your wisdom teeth out might be the best choice for your smile.
During your later teens years, another set of molars will come in. These are known as your wisdom teeth. While they won’t make you wiser they could potentially cause issues for your smile if they don’t come in correctly. In fact, most people will need to have their wisdom teeth removed at some point. Our Boynton Beach, FL, dentist Dr. Peter Silberstein is here to tell you why your wisdom teeth might need to come out and how.
When you come in for an evaluation, our Boynton Beach, FL, general dentist will take x-rays to see how your wisdom teeth are coming in. Of course, if you are experiencing pain and other problems due to your wisdom teeth, it’s important that you schedule an appointment with us; however, problematic wisdom teeth don’t always cause problems, which is why coming in for routine checkups every six months is a good idea so that we can continue to monitor your wisdom teeth as they grow in.
If the wisdom teeth grow in straight and don’t cause crowding or other problems then you may choose not to have your wisdom teeth removed. Unfortunately, many wisdom teeth come in crooked or at an angle, sometimes pushing against other teeth and causing damage. Problematic wisdom teeth can also cause:
- Bite problems
- Jaw discomfort
- Sinus problems
- Gum inflammation
- Crowding and other alignment issues
Impacted wisdom teeth (teeth that don’t fully erupt through the gums) cause an opening to occur within the gums, where bacteria can easily get trapped and infect the gum tissue. Impacted wisdom teeth, more of than not, will need to be removed as soon as possible.
Of course, if the problem isn’t urgent you may choose to continue to come in for routine dental cleanings and exams so that we can monitor the teeth. If you notice pain or changes in your bite during this time it’s important that you let us know.
Having wisdom teeth removed requires a very quick and simple in-office procedure. The type of extraction we recommend will depend on whether the wisdom teeth have fully emerged or whether they are impacted.
